Will Coy and Phoenix Grahame dominate at Barney Miller classic

Photos-Duncan Macfarlane

Will and Phoenix both won their divisions in the Barney Miller classic held in super fun waves at Sawtel last weekend. Both surfers were the standouts in there divisions and well and truly deserverd their wins,Will in the under 18's and Phoenix in the under 16's,Phoenix allso plased 3rd in the under 18's which capped of a stella weekend for the grom.

The Saturday night was a ''hootannanny'' begining with a fashion show that had the boys fighting it out for front row positions.Straight after the one and only DJ Fanta Pants put on a blistering performace that had everybody in awe, he played for a solid 5hrs ( with a little help from a couple bottle's of red )and knows how to get a place rocking.

The organisers of the contest can hold their heads up high, there are too many to mention but we know who they are...and of course Barney, what more can be said just that he is a classic guy who gives out so much to those around.

The Final day of competition was held on sunday for the barney miller classic. The waves were very similar to saturday with 2-3ft surf with the odd bigger set.
The rain came in squalls and was making for some very average lighting and clarity conditions to shoot in. So if the photo’s appear grainy - It’s the rain...

There was an expression session with $100 up for grabs for the biggest hack and $200 for the biggest air. Jayke sharp took out both with this big hack (see below) and an upside down air (which I missed). Steven Walsh did a big alley oop and an almost rodeo but didnt stick anything.
The Open mens final was what was everyone was waiting for. With $2500 for first prize...
In the final was Billy Kean, Jayke Sharp, Shaun Cansdell and ‘that guy in blue’.
With the final came some of the heaviest rain of the day. At some stages we could barley see the ocean. There were a few barrels being traded by Billy and Jayke, Cans milked a wave till he could step on the sand and ‘the guy in blue’ got a few smokers at the beginning of the heat.
This air Billy Kean did may have won him the title at the 11th Annual Barney Miller Classic. It would be safe to say this was the most inverted air landed in a competition in the entire world ever... maybe not. But he disappeared in the whitewash while everyone sighed and shook there heads saying “why would he do a throwaway like that”.
Then he popped up out of the whitewash to an eruption of cheering form the crown on the beach... $2500 for the Local boy.
